How to Reduce Fraud and Chargebacks When Selling Digital Goods
October 2, 2026
Fraud is the biggest hidden cost of selling digital goods. Delivery is instant and the goods can be resold in seconds, which makes digital stores an attractive target for stolen cards. A single chargeback can cost you the product, the payment and a fee on top. The good news: most fraud follows patterns you can block.
Know the common patterns
- Stolen cards used to buy keys or gift cards that are resold quickly
- Friendly fraud: a real buyer who receives the item and then disputes the charge
- Throwaway emails and repeated attempts from the same IP or device
- Mismatched locations: a card from one country, an IP from another, behind a VPN
Layer your defences
No single rule catches everything, but a few layers stop most of it.
1. Block known bad signals
Keep blocklists for emails, email domains, IP addresses and IP ranges that have caused problems. SellPass's Fraud Shield supports all of these, plus a shared platform blacklist of signals that have caused fraud across stores.
2. Stop disposable emails
Temporary inbox services are a favourite of fraudsters. Blocking them costs you almost no real buyers.
3. Flag, don't just block
For borderline orders (a risky country, a VPN, an unusually large order) it is better to hold the order than to reject it outright. On SellPass, flagged orders are paid but not delivered until you approve them, so you can take a quick look without losing good customers.
4. Limit velocity
Fraudsters test cards with many small orders in a short time. Per-IP rate limits make that much harder.
5. Prefer payment methods that cannot be reversed
Confirmed crypto payments cannot be charged back. For high-risk products you can restrict payment to crypto only.
Reduce friendly fraud
Many disputes come from buyers who were confused or could not reach you:
- Write clear product descriptions and a warranty or replacement policy.
- Show delivery clearly. Every SellPass order has an order page with the item and a receipt email, which makes disputes easier to win.
- Be easy to reach. Live chat on your store and a support inbox mean buyers ask you before they ask their bank.
- Replace instead of refund when a key or account fails. You can send a replacement from stock in one click.
Respond to disputes
When a dispute happens anyway, respond with evidence: the order page, delivery time, the buyer's email and IP, and any chat history. Keep everything in one place so it takes minutes, not hours.
Put it together
A simple starting setup: block disposable emails, flag orders from VPNs and high-risk countries, limit orders per IP, and publish clear warranty terms. Review your flagged orders daily and tune the rules as you learn.
